y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p>In the last seven days, <strong><a href="https://www.roblox.com/">Roblox</a></strong> made three announcements that the gaming press has largely covered as separate stories. A new subscription. Age-gated accounts. A requirement for developers to subscribe to reach younger users.</p><p>They aren&#8217;t separate stories. They&#8217;re one coordinated monetisation strategy and it tells you a lot about where platform economics are heading in 2026.</p><h3>The numbers that made this inevitable</h3><p>Start with the 2025 results. <br><br>Revenue hit $4.9 billion, up 36% year-on-year. Bookings, the better forward indicator, reached $6.8 billion, up 55%. Daily active users hit 144 million, up 69%.</p><p>For context, 144 million daily actives puts Roblox ahead of X (last reported DAU was around 100 million). It paid $1.5 billion to creators in 2025 alone. The top 10 developers averaged $33.9 million each, that&#8217;s up 450% since 2019.</p><p>At this scale, the growth playbook changes. You don&#8217;t need more users. You need more revenue per user, more revenue per developer, and more structural lock-in across the ecosystem. Everything Roblox announced this week serves exactly that goal.</p><h3>Move 1: Roblox Plus &#8212; a retention mechanism dressed as a subscription</h3><p>Roblox Plus launches April 30 at $4.99/month globally. On the surface it&#8217;s simple: subscribers get a 10% discount on in-game purchases, free unlimited private servers, and the ability to transfer Robux without transaction fees.</p><p>The mechanism worth understanding is the loyalty escalator. The discount doubles to 20% at month three of consecutive subscription. Cancel, and you drop back to zero. Restart, and the clock resets.</p><p>This isn&#8217;t Netflix-style passive retention. It&#8217;s an active penalty for leaving. The longer you stay, the more you lose by cancelling &#8212; which is a fundamentally different psychological contract than most subscriptions.</p><p>Roblox has been smart about the creator side too. They&#8217;re covering the discount themselves, meaning creators earn the same per-item as before. The subscriber&#8217;s Robux just stretches further, which in theory means more total purchases per subscriber. The platform absorbs the cost to avoid creator revolt while engineering higher spending frequency.</p><p>Retail partnerships with Samsung, Walmart, Amazon, and Target for bonus Robux offers also embed the subscription into purchasing behaviour that happens entirely outside the platform. That&#8217;s sophisticated distribution for a gaming product.</p><h3>Move 2: Age-gated accounts &#8212; safety architecture with a monetisation layer</h3><p>From June, Roblox rolls out two new account types for users under 16. Roblox Kids (ages 5-8) gets highly restricted content and no chat by default. Roblox Select (ages 9-15) gets a curated game catalogue and tighter parental controls. Accounts automatically progress as users age &#8212; Kids to Select at 9, Select to standard at 16.</p><p>The safety case is legitimate. Roblox says over half of its users are already age-checked. Unverified users will be pushed into a Kids-like experience &#8212; no chat, minimal content &#8212; until they complete verification. This is meaningful friction that most platforms have avoided because it creates drop-off risk.</p><p>The business logic running underneath it: by concentrating its youngest users into verified, age-gated tiers, Roblox creates a clearly defined, brand-safe audience segment. For advertisers, a verified 6-12 demographic with parental oversight is significantly more attractive than an anonymous mixed-age pool. Age-gating isn&#8217;t just compliance &#8212; it&#8217;s inventory quality.</p><h3>Move 3: The developer requirement &#8212; where it gets interesting</h3><p>This is the part most coverage has underplayed.<br><br>From May 19th, for a game to appear in front of users under 16, the developer must meet three requirements: ID verification, two-factor authentication, and an active Roblox Plus subscription.</p><p>Read that again. The $4.99/month subscription, launched as a player product on April 10th, becomes a mandatory operating cost for any developer who wants access to Roblox&#8217;s youngest and most active audience segment within six weeks of launch.</p><p>Roblox has been careful in how it frames this. The newsroom language says &#8220;developers must maintain an active Roblox Plus subscription&#8221; as one of several verification criteria. It doesn&#8217;t say &#8220;pay a monthly fee to publish.&#8221; But that&#8217;s the functional reality for any studio whose audience skews under 16, which is most of them.</p><p>For large studios generating millions in monthly revenue, $4.99 is noise. For the long tail of indie developers, educators, and smaller studios that Roblox has cultivated over a decade, it&#8217;s a new structural cost with no opt-out.</p><p><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamespurell/">James Purell</a>, founder of Roblox strategy consultancy <a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/buildingblox-gg/">BuildingBlox</a>, flagged this in his LinkedIn breakdown: &#8220;<em>The one thing I&#8217;ll note is the Roblox Plus requirement for developers. I think for younger developers, or those from more unfortunate regions, this does gatekeep development somewhat.</em>&#8221;</p><p>He&#8217;s right. And Roblox knows it. The question is whether the quality improvement from filtering out unverified, low-investment developers outweighs the ecosystem cost of pricing some of them out.</p><h3>The unified thesis</h3><p>Roblox has built a two-sided platform tax.</p><p>Players pay $4.99/month to access discounts on spending they were already going to do. The longer they subscribe, the higher the switching cost.</p><p>Developers pay $4.99/month to reach the audience segment their games were built for. The subscription is framed as a verification and quality signal, but the economic reality is a recurring platform fee.</p><p>Both flows feed the same outcome: higher yield per user and per developer on a platform that&#8217;s already at 144 million daily actives.</p><p>This is the natural endpoint for any platform that reaches sufficient scale. The growth phase ends. The monetisation phase begins. Apple did it with the App Store. Google did it with Play. Meta did it with the news feed. Roblox is doing it with its creator economy.</p><p>The difference is that Roblox is doing it with considerably more transparency than its predecessors. The terms are published. The safety rationale is coherent. The creator economics have been designed to avoid the backlash that killed Unity&#8217;s runtime fee in 2023.</p><p>What this means for UA managers and publishers</p><p>If you&#8217;re running UA on Roblox or considering it, the age-gating changes your targeting options significantly. A verified under-16 audience is a different product than an open platform, higher quality signal, potentially higher CPMs, but narrower reach for titles that depend on the casual, mixed-age install base.</p><p>The developer subscription requirement also signals where Roblox wants its ecosystem to go. Verified, professional, subscription-paying developers building curated content for a known audience. That&#8217;s a more controlled environment for brand advertising.</p><p>The flywheel is changing shape. Same platform. The UA infrastructure that built Royal Match is not a department inside Dream Games. It is a competitive advantage in its own right.</p><p>Here is the part that should interest every UA manager reading this.</p><p>Dream Games does not own an ad network. They do not sit on the supply side of mobile advertising. They are entirely on the demand side &#8212; one of the largest single buyers of casual gaming inventory in the world.</p><p>When Dream Games is buying aggressively, CPIs in the puzzle and casual category go up for everyone around them. When they pull back, or when their LTV curves compress and they reduce payback targets, the entire UA economics of the category shift.</p><p>They are not a participant in mobile advertising. They are a price-setter.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The Monopoly Dynamic</h3><p>This is the part that the &#8220;match-3 is dying&#8221; narrative gets completely backwards.</p><p>Match-3 is not dying. Every game on a long growth trajectory eventually faces the problem of acquiring harder-to-retain users. The easiest players to acquire come first. <br><br>As Royal Match exhausted the high-LTV addressable audience in its top markets, the economics of each incremental user naturally soften. If this is the explanation, the 2025 dip is not a product problem. It is a scale problem , the inevitable consequence of reaching saturation in the premium cohorts.</p><p>Competitive pressure from the strategy category. 2024 and 2025 saw significant UA spend shift to games like Whiteout Survival, Last War: Survival, and Monopoly GO. These titles are competing for the same high-spending casual-adjacent audience that Royal Match monetises well. If Dream Games lost some of their best users to strategy titles, the revenue impact would show up in LTV, not in downloads.</p><p>The 2026 trajectory will tell us which explanation is correct. March 2026 at ~$102M annualises to approximately $1.2B which, if it holds, would confirm the dip is real rather than statistical noise.</p><div><hr></div><h3>What This Means for Publishers and UA Managers</h3><p>If you are a casual or puzzle publisher: the ceiling question has been answered. <br><br>One studio proved the genre could sustain $1B+ annually from a single game. <br><br>If your match-3 or puzzle title is not at that scale, you are not competing with Royal Match. You are competing for what Royal Match left behind. <br><br>The addressable market is smaller than you think, and more expensive to reach than it was three years ago.</p><p>If you are a UA manager in mobile gaming: Dream Games&#8217; UA spend is one of the biggest signals in the category. Track their creative volume on Meta and AppLovin&#8217;s ad libraries. When they are buying hard, the category is expensive. When they ease off, there is a window. They do not announce this. The signals are in the ad libraries and the CPI data from your MMP.</p><p>If you are an advertiser in mobile: Royal Match is the best case study in the industry for what execution-driven LTV expansion looks like at scale. Their funnel is not magic. It is repeatable. behind it - <strong><a href="https://www.microfun.com/indexEN.htmlhttps://www.microfun.com/indexEN.html">Microfun</a></strong>, based in China is now the third highest-grossing Chinese mobile publisher in the world. Behind only <a href="https://www.tencent.com/en-us/">Tencent</a> and <a href="https://www.centurygames.com/">Century Games</a>.</p><p>Most people in Western mobile gaming still haven&#8217;t heard of them.</p><p>Here&#8217;s the full story.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The sequence</h3><p>2022: Microfun launches <strong><a href="https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gossip-harbor-merge-story/id1623318294">Gossip Harbor</a></strong> globally. The premise is simple: a woman discovers her husband is cheating, divorces him, returns to her family&#8217;s dilapidated restaurant with her daughter, and starts over. Players help her rebuild it through merge gameplay, combining ingredients, serving customers, uncovering the story.</p><p>The target demographic is US women aged 25-45. The aesthetic is vibrant, saturated, deliberately feminine. This was not an accident.</p><p>2024: Revenue grows tenfold in a single year. The US accounts for nearly 50% of all earnings. By November, Gossip Harbor surpasses Travel Town, the previous merge category leader, to become the highest-grossing merge game on Google Play globally.</p><p>2025: The game reaches an estimated 28 million monthly active users. Estimated lifetime revenue crosses $720 million.</p><p>2026: Microfun overtakes NetEase to become the #3 Chinese mobile publisher worldwide by overseas revenue. One title powered a studio past one of China&#8217;s largest gaming companies.</p><div><hr></div><h3>How they actually did it</h3><p>The numbers are interesting. The mechanism is more interesting.</p><p>Gossip Harbor does something most Western casual studios still don&#8217;t: it treats live ops as onboarding, not retention.</p><p>Most casual games introduce live ops events in month two, after players have established a habit. The events are a tool to bring people back. Gossip Harbor puts events, competitive mechanics, and time-limited offers in front of players in their first sessions. By the time someone understands the core merge loop, they are already inside the monetisation rhythm.</p><p>According to Balancy, a live ops platform that deconstructed the game in a March 2026 webinar, top merge titles now run 100+ live ops events per month. Gossip Harbor is among the leaders in event density. The offers are sequenced by price point, a $2.99 introductory bundle appears early, not to generate revenue, but to identify which players will spend and what they respond to. It is behavioural sampling disguised as a promotion.</p><p>The result is a 4.63 App Store rating with 575,000 reviews. At that review count, that rating is not luck. It is a product that people genuinely enjoy, despite  (or because of)  its aggressive monetisation design.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The data</h3><p>Our analysis of <strong><a href="https://sensortower.com/">SensorTower</a> </strong>estimates shows Gossip Harbor&#8217;s US revenue trajectory over the past seven months:</p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a Revenue is in USD.</em></p><p>That January spike of 1.28 million downloads, $28.6M revenue, is not organic. Microfun ran a major UA push into the new year window, a period when casual CPIs drop post-holidays and competition for impressions falls. They timed it precisely.</p><div><hr></div><h3>The market shift behind the game</h3><p>Gossip Harbor is not an outlier. It is evidence of a structural shift in who is winning the US casual market.<br><br>Our analysis of US top chart data across the past six months shows the Casual/Puzzle category has taken 0.9 percentage points of download share from Action games. Action is the biggest loser. Casual is the biggest gainer. And the studios leading the casual category right now are overwhelmingly operating with Chinese production discipline, even when they are not Chinese.</p><p><strong><a href="https://www.dreamgames.com/">Dream Games</a> </strong>(Turkey) is the clearest Western exception. <a href="https://apps.apple.com/ge/app/royal-kingdom/id1606549505">Royal Kingdom </a>pulled an estimated $14 million from the US in February 2026 alone, and Dream Games has the same design rigour as their Chinese counterparts: story-first, live ops from session one, UA spend concentrated on proven creatives.</p><p>But Dream Games is one studio. The broader pattern is:</p><p>&#8226; Microfun - Gossip Harbor, Seaside Escape, Flamb&#233;: Merge and Cook. A portfolio approach, same playbook across titles.</p><p>&#8226; Century Games - Whiteout Survival, Call of Dragons. Strategy and casual. $40M+ US revenue in February.</p><p>&#8226; FUNFLY - $51M US estimated revenue in February across two titles. Barely covered in Western press.</p><p>Three Chinese publishers generating a combined estimated $124M from US players in a single month.</p><div><hr></div><h3>What this means if you&#8217;re buying casual inventory</h3><p>Casual is getting more expensive on the buy side. Chinese publishers are pouring UA budget into Western markets. CPIs in casual are rising as a result.</p><p>The games winning organic chart position right now are not the ones spending least. They are the ones with the tightest live ops cadence, which drives the retention that makes paid UA profitable. Higher retention means higher LTV means they can outbid everyone else for the same inventory.</p><p>If you are buying rewarded or casual placements and your publisher partners are not running aggressive live ops, you are buying into declining LTV. to find it a buyer.</p><p>It&#8217;s the second time in four years the company has tried this. <br><br>The first attempt, in February 2022, went nowhere. <br><br>Private equity circled in 2023 but walked away. <br>By 2024, management paused the process entirely, blaming &#8220;ongoing uncertainty in Israel and Ukraine.&#8221;</p><p>Now they&#8217;re back. <br><br>Market cap: $1.21 billion. Enterprise value: $2.7 to $2.9 billion. That&#8217;s 91% below where they IPO&#8217;d in January 2021.</p><p>This isn&#8217;t just a bad investment story. It&#8217;s a case study in what happens when a mobile company builds one thing extremely well and then runs out of road.</p><p>&#9472;&#9472;&#9472;</p><h3>The Numbers First</h3><p>2021: Playtika lists on <a href="https://www.nasdaq.com/">NASDAQ</a>. Market cap at IPO: $12.95 billion. Biggest Israeli tech listing ever. Profitable, growing, tens of millions of daily users.</p><p>2025: Revenue for the full year comes in at $2.75 billion, up 8.1% year on year. Adjusted net income: $197.5 million.</p><p>But the net loss for 2025 was $206.4 million.</p><p>The gap between those two numbers tells you most of what you need to know. Significant charges sitting beneath the surface, largely tied to the $1.95 billion acquisition of SuperPlay (Dice Dreams, Disney Solitaire) completed in late 2024.</p><p>Playtika paid nearly $2 billion for SuperPlay. That deal is now a major line item sitting on the balance sheet at a company with a market cap of $1.21 billion.</p><p>January 2026: Playtika announces layoffs of 500 employees. CEO Robert Antokol&#8217;s message to staff: &#8220;Our broad growth mindset is no longer sustainable.&#8221;</p><p>April 2026: Strategic review. Second attempt. Morgan Stanley.</p><p>&#9472;&#9472;&#9472;</p><h3>The Category Problem</h3><p>Playtika was built on social casino. Slotomania, World Series of Poker, Caesars Slots, Bingo Blitz. High ARPU, sticky retention, a core user base that plays daily.</p><p>But the category has structural limits. Social casino can&#8217;t grow its addressable market the way casual puzzle or strategy games can. Regulatory pressure in Europe and parts of Asia continues to tighten around simulated gambling mechanics. The organic download curve for new social casino titles has been weak for years.</p><p>By 2025, casual games represented 70.8% of Playtika&#8217;s total revenue. The company had been pivoting away from pure social casino for years, SuperPlay was the biggest bet on that pivot.</p><p>The Q4 2025 earnings guidance was direct about it: &#8220;ongoing declines in social casino revenue partially offset by the scaling success of growth franchises.&#8221;</p><p>Partially offset. That&#8217;s the hole.</p><p>&#9472;&#9472;&#9472;</p><h3>Why No Buyer Showed Up in 2022</h3><p>When Playtika ran its first strategic review, the enterprise value was considerably higher. Private equity firms looked, <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/uk">Bloomberg</a> confirmed interest from buyout firms in 2023, but no deal materialised.</p><p>Now the enterprise value has compressed to $2.7&#8211;2.9 billion. The switching cost is real even when the financial cost is zero.</p><p>This is the company behind Monopoly Go, one of only two Western mobile titles to gross over $1 billion since 2020. <br><br>When they say 80% of revenue comes from players who&#8217;ve been there for a year or more, that&#8217;s not a quirk of their game. It&#8217;s a description of where mobile gaming value actually lives.</p><p>For UA managers, this reframes the entire job.</p><p>If your best revenue is locked inside your existing player base, acquisition spend is only half the equation. <br><br>The studios that win the next five years aren&#8217;t the ones that get the most installs. They&#8217;re the ones that build something worth staying in.</p><p>I think the industry is still calibrated for the discovery era. The numbers coming out of it are hard to ignore.<br><br>&#127475;&#127468; Nigeria has 46.5 million gamers<br>&#127466;&#127468; Egypt leads in revenue generation across the continent<br>&#127487;&#127462; South Africa anchors the infrastructure<br>MLBB and PUBG Mobile are driving mobile esports growth across all three markets<br><br>The continent is growing at 12% CAGR. For context, Western mobile gaming markets are flat to 1-2%.<br><br>Meanwhile the average CPI in Western markets for casual gaming is sitting at $6 to $8 and rising. African markets are a fraction of that.<br><br>I think the narrative around mobile gaming is too Western. The next 100 million mobile gamers aren't in the US or Western Europe. They're in Lagos, Cairo and Johannesburg.<br><br>The publishers and UA teams moving there now have a 2 to 3 year head start on everyone who's still optimising for saturated Those are real careers, real teams, real people who built things they were proud of.<br><br>Before the industry analysis, that deserves to be said.<br><br>Now here's what I think matters for anyone in that situation right now.<br><br>These were two completely different cuts. <br><br><strong><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/epic-games/">Epic Games</a></strong>'s problem was Fortnite engagement. Revenue wasn't keeping up with spend. That is a product and content challenge, not an industry collapse. <br><br><strong><a href="https://www.linkedin.com/company/meta/">Meta</a></strong>'s cuts hit Reality Labs, recruiting and sales while the company commits up to $169 billion to AI infrastructure in 2026. That is a strategic reallocation, not a retreat.<br><br>The skills walking out of both companies are not the skills the industry is moving away from. They are exactly the skills the rest of mobile gaming is trying to find.<br><br>UA. Product. Live ops. Content strategy. Ad sales. Data and measurement.<br><br>Scopely is on an acquisition spree and openly building its studio roster. Supercell has been investing in new studios. Publishers like Voodoo, Supersonic and the newly launched Arcade are all scaling. The rewarded and performance advertising space is growing, not contracting.<br><br>1,700 people just became available.
